Living in Inlet Beach
Inlet Beach is the easternmost beach town in South Walton County, named for Phillips Inlet, which separates Walton and Bay counties. The McCaskill Investment Company of DeFuniak Springs laid out the area in the 1920s, and after World War II much of the land went to veterans by lottery, which earned it the nickname Soldiers Beach.
U.S. 98 divides Inlet Beach in two. Rosemary Beach is next door to the west, and the 32461 ZIP code also takes in Rosemary Beach, Seacrest, Alys Beach and WaterSound.
Lake Powell and Camp Helen
Lake Powell, the largest coastal dune lake in Florida, sits on the Walton and Bay county line, and a public fishing dock reaches into it off North Walton Lakeshore Drive. Camp Helen State Park, just across the line, borders the Gulf and Lake Powell. Its lodge dates to before the 1940s, and starting in 1945 Avondale Mills of Sylacauga, Alabama, ran it for decades as a resort for its employees.
The Inlet Beach Regional Beach Access protects slightly more than 13 acres of dunes and has plentiful parking, a restroom, an outdoor shower, summer lifeguards and long dune walkovers.
